We thought we would highlight something a little different today, and Apopo is what we came up with. Apopo is a Belgian NGO, headquartered in Tanzania, which “researches, develops and disseminates detection rats technology for humanitarian purposes.” That’s right you read that right…rats. Apopo primarily specializes in training rats to sniff out explosives. They use rats because rats have highly sensitive noses which allows them to find both plastic and medal explosives, and because they are small, light, cheap and easy to train. In addition, to being able pinpoint the location of landmines quickly and effectively, Apopo’s HeroRATs can also “sniff out deadly tuberculosis (TB) faster than traditional laboratory microscopy.” To learn more about Apopo click here.
