Update on Ben & Jerry’s

ice-cream-fair-trade-cocoa-600-93572A while back, we did a post on Fair-trade ingredients used within Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt. We are pleased to post, they have increased their use of Fair-trade ingredients within many new and old flavors. They have over 50 flavors that contain mostly Fair Trade ingredients. They use Fair-trade cocoa, vanilla, coffee, bananas, and sugar. “Ben & Jerry’s is committed to sourcing Fair-trade certified ingredients for all of our products. Throughout 2013 we are transitioning all of our products globally to use Fair-trade ingredients.”

Coffee: Using Fair-trade coffee and helping to improve the lives of the farmers with their partners at Coffee Extracts and Ingredients, Sustainable Harvest Coffee Importers, and the Huatusco Cooperative. They have also provided i-Pads to help speed the production process and have personal face-to-face interviews with the actual farmers.

Sugar: This year ALL Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt will use Fair-trade sugar.

“Fair-trade is about making sure people get their fair share of the pie. The whole concept of fair trade goes to the heart of our values and the sense of right and wrong. Nobody wants to buy something that was made by exploiting somebody else.” Ben & Jerry’s Co-Founder Jerry Greenfield.
