Give Shoes Give Love

“Over 300 million children around the world are without shoes. Walking barefoot puts their bodies at major risk of contracting life threatening illnesses caused by parasites, such as hookworm and threadworm.”

A new micro campaign has formed in order to combat this problem: Soles4Souls and The Love Alliance.

For only $7 a month you can provide 7 pairs of shoes. With each monthly gift of $7, “that adds up to 84 children a year! That’s 84 children avoiding major illness. 84 children now welcome in school. 84 children walking towards a brighter future.

Right now if you give to this Give Shoes. Give Love. campaign, you will receive a free exclusive limited edition Love Alliance Shirt. Wear the shirt and spread the word.

An Interview with Rebecca Cicione from Soles4Souls

Who are you?

My name is Rebecca Cicione – I’m a 20-year-old girl from New Jersey living in Nashville, TN. I work with Soles4Souls, a nonprofit organization dedicated to distributing shoes to those in need around the world. We respond to natural disasters and those in abject poverty.

What is your interest in social justice?

I’ve always had a passion for social justice causes. I’ve worked with multiple organizations that past few years because I really can’t stand to just sit by and watch when there’s an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals around the world.

How did you end up working at Soles4Souls?

Well, it’s a funny story. Back in June of last year, someone I highly respect in the music industry (my other passion) recommended that if I move to Nashvile, that I should contemplate volunteering with this organization called Soles4Souls. I had recently graduated college and was exploring various opportunities. In late August, I was still home in Jersey and perusing job listings for Nashville when I came across one for Soles4Souls. They were looking for a new social media specialist. I remembered the name from our conversation and immediately took to updating and designing my resume. After a few hours of hard work, I applied for the job at about 3am Monday morning…and by 8am received a phone call asking me to come in for an interview. Long story short, I was interviewed over Skype and then asked to make the trip down for one final evaluation before they made me the job offer. So I packed up everything I could fit into my little Honda Civic and relocated to Nashville (probably my favorite city), just a few days after. It was one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made!

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic and work in some of the poorest villages. In these villages, large families lived in small shacks; living only about two miles away from the beautiful beaches along the Caribbean. However, many of the children had never stepped foot in the gorgeous clear water or even in the warm sand. Although we might find that a crime to live so close to the beach and never experience it, that was the least of their worries. One thing that stood out amongst everything was how little they had. Some children had little clothes and almost no one had shoes. No shoes? How could someone walk around in the glass and rock filed dirt roads with no shoes? Unfortunately, about 300 million children* in the world walk around without shoes every day. Fortunately, there are many ways you can help put shoes on these barefoot children. One unique organization is Soles4Souls.
